Welcome to Notes from the Field
We’re your early career mentor for everything you didn’t learn in school. Whether you’re preparing for your first job or a few years into your career, we’re here to guide you with the best practices, frameworks, advice, and critical skills you need to succeed. We ask a provocative question each week - ones without a clear answer - to explore your thinking, your context, and your response. This isn’t a cookbook with instructions dictating what to do when. Instead, we provide a window into how others in the field respond - and their reasoning - in a low-risk arena to develop & practice your critical thinking skills.
What to Expect
A weekly post on a key topic starting with a clear question – one that often isn’t easily answered – and a clear framework for how to answer it yourself
A diverse and inclusive environment for collaborative discussion on key topics impacting your career experience & trajectory
A gentle push outside your comfort zone and into a learning & growth mindset (without overstepping into your “stupid zone”)
Like so much of life, you will enjoy benefits that are in direct proportion to your effort. Ours are not lessons for the passive observer, but challenges for the engaged & pragmatic student.
Our Objectives
Our objectives are straight-forward:
To create a window into the world of work as it evolves for the next generation
To “mentor from the field” with contributions, perspectives, and advice across a diverse range of collaborators with fifteen years or more experience in the working world;
To coach the timeless skills everyone needs - for work and for life - with “in the field” practical direction, advice, and opportunities to learn
Our History
While we showcase a diverse range of contributors from the field, our founders began this journey in 1993 via postcards sent from a wide variety of cities, countries, airports, and corporate offices:
Hello World. Welcome to Notes from the Field.
Nearly thirty years ago, well before the ubiquity of the internet, I raced three blocks to the mailbox every day for years. For me, this ritual was a daily connection to my father, who often traveled long and far to advise large organizations on the latest management theories and complex project execution of the day.
Today, we share the same frameworks with you in a digital format, directly to your inbox. Our topics may cover a wide spectrum, but our mission is the same: to ensure you are best prepared for the experience of a lifetime: your career.
